Newcastle United are now leading the interest in signing an "amazing" striker, who sporting director Ross Wilson has been monitoring for months.

Newcastle set sights on new striker amid Woltemade's poor form

After scoring the own goal that decided the derby against Sunderland, Nick Woltemade responded by bagging a brace in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea back in December, but the centre-forward has since been on a concerning run of form.

The German is without a goal in his last eight Premier League outings, most recently failing to find the net as Eddie Howe's side fell to a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Brentford.

Of course, it is the 23-year-old's first season in England, and he has impressed at times, chipping in with nine goals in all competitions since making the move from Stuttgart.

As such, it is probably a little early to start thinking about bringing in a replacement, but the St. James' Park outfit have now set their sights on a La Liga striker.

That is according to a report from Spain, which states Newcastle are now leading the interest in signing Levante star Karl Etta Eyong, who Wilson has been monitoring for months, as they want to bring in a 'top-class' striker during the summer transfer window.

There is a belief Etta Eyong would be a good fit in the Premier League, and he is open to a move to England, which suggests a deal could be possible, and Levante may look to receive €30m (£26m), which is an affordable fee.

Interest in the centre-forward from within La Liga has cooled, which suggests Howe's side may be well-placed to win the race, but there are some doubts over whether he would be a good addition to the squad.

"Amazing" Etta Eyong also struggling in front of goal

Much like Woltemade, the 22-year-old made a flying start to the campaign, receiving plaudits from scout Jacek Kulig courtesy of his form back in October.

However, the Cameroon international has struggled for goals as of late, failing to find the net in his last nine La Liga matches, which raises questions about whether he is ready to make a move to a club like Newcastle.

He's one to watch...

Signing a new striker could be a savvy move, given that Yoane Wissa hasn't exactly set the world alight since returning from injury, netting just one goal in 11 Premier League appearances.

However, even though Newcastle aren't enjoying the best of seasons, they can probably attract a better calibre of player than Etta Eyong, and they should re-assess their options at the end of the campaign.
