Tyler Fletcher has revealed the advice Michael Carrick gave to him before making his Manchester United debut against Spurs.
In additional time of Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon, Tyler Fletcher became the 258th academy graduate for the club.
His brother, Jack, also made his debut recently, coming on against Aston Villa and playing in a double pivot with Lisandro Martínez. The twin brothers are sons of Darren Fletcher, who named both of his children on the bench during his two games in charge.
Tyler replaced Kobbie Mainoo with just minutes left of the game. As per FotMob, he completed all seven of his attempted passes and looked more than comfortable alongside Manuel Ugarte.
Before Fletcher entered the action, Michael Carrick was seen giving a last piece of advice to the youngster.
What did Carrick say to Fletcher?
Speaking to MUTV following his debut, Fletcher said: “I found out I was in the squad yesterday, after the session. I got told you will be with the first team, you’ll be on the bench. I was buzzing with that.”
“I was warming up in the last five minutes and five minutes got added on. I got the call and I was like: ‘No way is this happening’.
“I was told to go and enjoy it and make as many passes as you can, get as many touches as you can, and that’s what I did.” Carrick’s simple advice took the pressure off Fletcher, allowing him just to enjoy the experience.
Some fans believe Carrick understands United more than most, likely due to his impressive career for the club, making him an ideal candidate for the full-time head coach role.
His advice to Fletcher confirms he knows what he means for a player to make their debut, and Fletcher’s debut tells fans Carrick understands how important the academy is to the club.
Why not Carrick?
Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox will be searching for the next United head coach now, with the hopes they can bring them in before the summer, so they can understand the system they will play and the profiles of players that could be needed.
Names like Luis Enrique and Thomas Tuchel have been mentioned, but should Carrick’s name be in the managerial hat?

The former United midfielder has already returned Old Trafford to an exciting place that opposition fear travelling to, while he has also proven he can beat the best teams in the league.
Yes, he was only hired as a short-term option, but if he keeps going like this, it would be very difficult not to reward him with the full-time role.
