Sky : West Ham have a new talisman in survival struggle

Whether or not West Ham United’s revival of the last few weeks will be in vain depends upon the response of rivals Nottingham Forest over the next few weeks. The gap could be zero or – more likely – six points again by the end of the week depending on how Forest fare against bottom side Wolves.

According to SkySports, West Ham have found themselves a new hero in the battle. For whilst Mateus Fernandes got the popular vote as the Man of the Match, Dutch flyer Crysencio Summerville may be the catalyst that fires the Hammers towards an unlikely late bid for survival:

“West Ham love a talisman. A maverick-type individual who doesn’t necessarily bend or sway in the same direction of the team but will always deliver.

*From Carlos Tevez to Dimitri Payet,*[main pic] an individual who captures the hearts and minds of Hammers is West Ham heritage. Crysencio Summerville could be another talisman on a long line of individual stars at West Ham as he continues drive West Ham’s survival bid.”

Claiming that Summerville’s rite of passage in Claret and Blue is now complete following an agonising first season in which he missed more than half the games and required hamstring surgery, Sky have even come up with a new term for his elevation from Leeds recruit to Irons talisman:

“His fifth straight goal in as many matches at Burnley was a crucial one. For many obvious reasons, as it set the tone for the Hammers’ eventual victory.

*However, on a personal note, it marks the “coming of a Hammer” for Summerville, who hadn’t scored all season before his current run.*”

Don’t know about the ‘coming of a Hammer’ but if he keeps scoring long enough to help the Hammers to their required seven wins in thirteen games he’ll deserve a very special place in Hammers folklore.
