Tottenham Hotspur will be without one of their key players when they take on Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Newcastle won on their last visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January 2025 after goals from Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak cancelled out Dominic Solanke’s fourth minute opener.

The two sides have twice met at St James’ Park this season, with the Magpies emerging as 2-0 winners in the Carabao Cup in October before playing out a 2-2 draw in the Premier League five weeks later.

United twice took the lead that night through Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon’s penalty but Cristian Romero equalised on both occasions.

But Romero won’t be available this time around after the Argentinian was sent off during Spurs’ 2-0 defeat away to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

The scoreline was 0-0 when referee Michael Oliver showed Romero a red card after his studs caught the ankle of Casemiro.

The Premier League Match Centre confirmed the decision “was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that the challenge was made with excessive force and endangered an opponent”.

A straight red card for violent conduct results in an automatic three-match ban. However, because Romero has already been sent off this season - his first coming with two yellows against Liverpool in December – he will now have to serve a four-game ban.

That rules the 27-year-old out of Tuesday’s clash against Newcastle, plus the North London derby versus Arsenal and other Premier League matches against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

What Spurs boss Thomas Frank said about Cristian Romero red card

Reacting to the red card, Spurs boss Thomas Frank said :He's apologised to his team-mates in the changing room. He's one of our most important players. He doesn't have any intention to get a red card.

"He's apologised to the team and that's enough for me right now, there's nothing more to do."

"The red card is a red card," he said. "I've watched it back five times. Cuti tried to go for the ball. You play with passion and aggression and there's a fine line."
