Newcastle United will run checks on both Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon at Benton today with both in contention to face Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow night.

Miley has been nursing what was initially reported as a knee issue suffered in the warm-up at Liverpool, while Gordon is still recovering from a hamstring issue picked up away to Man City in the Carabao Cup. However, Howe has confirmed that Brazilian enforcer Joelinton has been ruled out of the trip to the capital.

Howe, speaking at his pre-match Press conference ahead of the clash at Spurs, said: "Miley, I need to see today, we will get another update on his progress.

"He got a nasty bang to his leg, so it was a dead leg, and it has dragged on a little bit longer than we thought so we will see how he is."

Speaking on Gordon, Howe said: "Gordon, we will make a check on him and see how he is progressing today. Hopefully, a big improvement from him."

But he was clear on Joelinton's chances and commented: "Joelinton won't make this game."

Howe welcomed back Bruno Guimaraes from an ankle problem in the 3-2 defeat against Brentford, but the head coach still has long-term absentees Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar still unavailable.

Schar was spotted on crutches at St James' Park as he turned up to support the team against the Bees and is not close to a return after an ankle injury, having undergone surgery.

Howe had said on Schar: "He had a successful surgery which is great news. Everything went according to plan.

"It's difficult to give a definitive but I think around three months out will be the diagnosis we'll work towards. If it's any quicker then great, but we need to give Fabian time to recover."
