Man Utd will look to sign an elite midfielder this summer and could make a move for the Newcastle star.
Manchester United are one of several clubs interested in Newcastle star Sandro Tonali should he be on the move in the summer transfer window.
Tonali has been touted as a potential midfield signing for United this summer as they look to replace Casemiro when his contract expires at the end of the campaign. United will prioritise a midfield refresh this year, with two additions expected in that area of the pitch. Kobbie Mainoo's rejuvenated form has switched the focus to signing a top defensive midfielder this summer. At the same time, they would then look to add another player for squad depth rather than a regular starting role.
United have a preference to sign someone who is Premier League proven, with Tonali viewed as one of the most attractive options ahead of the summer window. The Italy international would not be short of interest if Newcastle made themselves open to a sale after recent links with both Arsenal and Man City.
Manchester United latest on Sandro Tonali
Eddie Howe recently claimed that Sandro Tonali is ‘very happy’ at Newcastle United amid increased speculation over his future at the club. The 25-year-old was reportedly offered to league leaders Arsenal in the closing days of the winter window, while he has also been identified as a potential target for Man City at the end of the season.
Manchester United are the latest side linked with a deal for the Italy international, who joined Newcastle in 2023 for an initial fee believed to be in the region of £55 million. It is not clear how much he might cost this summer, though early indications suggest he could command a fee of roughly £100 million.
Manchester World understand United would be interested in a potential move, but the club have yet to make a final decision on their top target for the summer window. United are also well aware that if a player of Tonali’s quality became available, most top clubs would want to add him to their squad and there could be a fierce battle for his signature at the end of the season.
Speaking last week, Tonali’s agent claimed discussions were scheduled to discuss his long-term future at Newcastle. "Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League,” Beppe Riso told tuttosport. “These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do. There’s no preference at the moment. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow. Newcastle couldn’t let him go now, and there’s no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club. We’ll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer.”
