How Albion players rated in bitter defeat to old rivals

This is how they performed in somehow managing to lose 1-0 defeat to toothless but well-disciplined Crystal Palace.

Bart Verbruggen 6/10

Got good contact on the Sarr shot but could not keep it out. Did fine with high balls and made a couple of decent saves late on.

Ferdi Kadioglu 5/10

Among the defenders left trailing amid the wreckage of the only goal and his use of the ball was not what it has been in a game were there were spaces to attack.

Lewis Dunk 6/10

Hia stray header was at the origin of the goal but a lot still had to happen for the ball to end up in the net. Made an important chase back on Sarr late in the first half but missed a decent headed chance.

Olivier Boscagli 5.5/10

Is tidy on the ball and looks to play but does not always convince defensively.

Max De Cuyper 5/10

Did not offer a lot but had Albion’s best effort of the first hour with a shot which was blocked in front of goal.

Carlos Baleba 5/10

Is becoming careless in possession again and was reprieved by Sarr. Did not impose himself but obviously remains popular among fans.

Pascal Gross 5/10

When even Gross misplaced passes in the second half, you knew things were getting serious. Was used too deep to impact the game.

Harry Howell 6/10

A first Prem start and, understandably, kept it simple. Showed nice movement to create space a couple of times in the second half but we did not see the full picture from the 17-year-old on this occasion.

Georginio Rutter 5/10

No shortage of effort but things are just not coming off for him and he seems to be trying to force it. Amid the criticism, plus some cheers when he went off, it should not be forgotten his clever pass created Albion’s best chance.

Kaoru Mitoma 5/10

Did not have the impact or the touch we know he can but his attack down the outside and drilled low cross almost led to a breakthrough.

Charalampos Kostoulas 5/10

Dovetailed with Rutter in an attacking double act but, despite intermittent nice touches, could not take the biggest chance.

SUBS – Diego Gomez 5/10

Was booked and largely bypassed after being sent into midfield.

Yankuba Minteh 5/10

Tried his luck without success on both right and left.

Danny Welbeck 5/10

Did not interrupt the comfort of Palace’s afternoon at the back and looked frustrated.

Matt O’Riley N/A

Looked like he wanted to make things happen on his return.

Jack Hinshelwood N/A

His presence at least allowed a more sensible team shape.
