Tottenham could shop in Ligue 1 for a central defender.
Thomas Frank has struggled badly since taking over at Tottenham Hotspur last year. Spurs currently sit 14th in the Premier League, having picked up just 29 points from their first 24 games this season.
The Danish boss retains the support of the Tottenham hierarchy for now, but there is little breathing room for him as he navigates an unprecedented injury situation. Their defence has come under scrutiny in recent months. The backline has been leaking goals at an alarming rate, leaving Thomas Frank frustrated when his principles have always been about compactness and discipline.
Cristian Romero returned to his old self at the weekend as he made an out-of-control, studs-up challenge on Manchester United star Casemiro, resulting in a straight red card. The South American’s dismissal was a tough one to gulp down for Thomas Frank, as he will now miss the next four games, and it comes after the defender shared his frustrations on social media about how the club is being run.
On top of that, Romero has been recently linked with a move to Barcelona, while his centre-back partner, Micky van de Ven, continues to draw the attention of Liverpool. It is extremely unlikely the Hotspur Way chiefs let go of both the starting centre-backs in one transfer window, but if Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League, then keeping hold of the duo would become a big task.
Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell shortlisted by Tottenham
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell is the subject of interest from Tottenham. He has been added to the north London club’s defensive shortlist, which also features Murillo of Nottingham Forest, Antonio Silva of Benfica and Joel Ordonez of Club Brugge.
Charlie Cresswell has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in Ligue 1 since joining Toulouse from Leeds United in the summer of 2024. He has made significant progress in the last 18 months, racking up over 50 appearances while chipping in with 11 goal contributions. The Englishman’s rise in Ligue 1 hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Tottenham scouting him this season.
The Preston-born talent has a bright future in the game, and Tottenham must look to secure his signature to futureproof their defence. After spending a couple of years, Cresswell might be interested in returning to England and play for one of the ‘Big Six’ clubs in the Premier League.
The Toulouse star could be viewed as a potential replacement for Radu Dragusin, who wanted to leave N17 in January due to regular minutes. Having closed the door on an exit, Dragusin is expected to push for an exit in the summer to resurrect his career. However, the Lilywhites will likely face stiff competition from Premier League rivals and other European clubs for Cresswell’s signature.
