Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero has been heavily linked with a move to La Liga.
Tottenham Hotspur are bracing themselves for a big transfer fight this summer after the events of the last week.
Cristian Romero outlined his thoughts on the club’s general direction after being taken off as a half-time substitute due to illness in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City. This massively put the centre-back’s future in north London in doubt, with the 2022 World Cup extremely unhappy with the Lilywhites for failing to match his ambitions.
Just days after his rant on the club’s poor transfer dealings on social media, Cristian Romero left his Tottenham teammates to suffer after he picked up a red card for a ludicrous challenge on Manchester United star Casemiro on Saturday. Before his dismissal, the game was evenly poised as Spurs stayed compact and defended in numbers to frustrate Manchester United. Eventually, the Red Devils found a way past the visitors via Bryan Mbeumo, before Bruno Fernandes scored the second goal to seal the deal.
The Argentine has been linked with a move away from N17 since last year, and it looks like speculation on his future is again becoming rife ahead of the summer.
Cristian Romero reaches verbal agreement to join Real Madrid
Real Madrid have been showing an interest in Romero of late. The La Liga giants have underperformed this season, with coach Xabi Alonso getting sacked last month and replaced by interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Yet, the results haven’t improved.
Los Blancos have had so many problems defensively, especially with the availability of the centre-backs. With Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba ageing and past their primes, they want to recruit a quality centre-back in the summer. And the Spanish club have made their first move to sign the Tottenham skipper.
According to a report from South American outlet D Sport, Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with Romero’s agent ahead of a potential summer move. The 27-year-old could join Real Madrid after this summer’s World Cup, with Romero hoping to help Argentina retain the crown.
Romero is a dream signing for Real’s president Florentino Perez, but their arch-rivals Barcelona have a plan to lure him away from N17. The report adds that Barcelona are planning to offer Ronald Araujo and money as part of a cash+swap deal to sign Romero, who has ambitions to play regularly in the Champions League and compete for major honours.
However, having reached a verbal agreement with his representatives, Real have laid the brickwork for the South American star’s addition. The Santiago Bernabeu now appears to be his preferred destination, although anything can change from now on until the end of the season.
Tottenham must cash in on Romero
Romero seemingly can’t stay on the pitch, with his latest red card ruling him out for the next four Premier League matches. Spurs simply are unable to rely on the Cordoba-born talent, who is becoming a little bit of both a nuisance and a liability with his off-field outbursts on social media and red card record.
The Argentina international is among the best in his position, but his hot-headed nature often works against him, and the latest example was his ridiculous challenge on Casemiro. The writing is on the wall for the Hotspur Way chiefs to understand that Romero’s heart lies elsewhere, despite him signing a new contract back in August 2025.
Thus, the wise move would be to sell Romero in the summer and get a substantial fee to invest in a quality replacement. Losing the 27-year-old would mean losing quality, leadership, experience and winning mentality, but it may be for the best outcome for all the parties involved.
