Return of the Fulham video assistant as Albion head to Aston Villa

The Yorkshire-based official will monitor events from Stockley Park for the midweek fixture.

He was the centre of attention in that role recently when he disallowed Danny Welbeck’s goal at Fulham for offside.

Doubts remain as to the validity of that decision although there were claims he was 1cm offside.

He will be working in support of match referee Peter Bankes.

The official from Lancashire was last in action on Friday when Leeds beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 in the league.

Before that, he was entrusted with a high-stakes Carabao Cup tie as Arsenal faced Chelsea in the second leg of the semi-final.

Bankes’s recent appointments also include the Fulham v Chelsea derby in which he sent off Marc Cucurella.

That was one of three red cards he has shown this season, along with 71 yellows in his 18 games at an average of four per match.

Albion fans last saw him earlier this season in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth, which was settled by a penalty to the home team.

He also refereed the Seagulls’ 3-1 win at Manchester United last season.

The full officiating team for Aston Villa v Albion is as follows.

Referee: Peter Bankes. Assistants: Eddie Smart, Blake Antrobus. Fourth official: Sam Allison. VAR: Tony Harrington. Assistant VAR: Sian Massey-Ellis.
