Loan going nowhere – Crystal Palace youngster fails to deliver, deal under review

Since his arrival from Crystal Palace, Matheus França’s loan at Vasco da Gama is a case that is failing on every front.

That is now the clear reading in Brazil. As recently put out by Globo Esporte and Itatiaia Esporte, the midfielder’s situation is under internal discussion at Vasco. The club is fully aware that his performances have fallen well short of expectations since the loan began.

França is one of the highest earners in the squad, yet the numbers tell a brutal story. He has played 21 matches and has not scored or assisted once. For a player signed to add creativity and quality in the final third, the impact of the Crystal Palace loan has simply not been there.

Not a part of the main squad

The lack of return has quickly reshaped his role in the squad. França is now considered only the fourth option for the creative midfield role. Even with manager Fernando Diniz’s rotation, his minutes have dried up. In some games, the Crystal Palace player has been left out purely for technical reasons.

That was the case against third-tier side Madureira, when he was not even selected despite a mixed line-up. In the local derby against Botafogo, he stayed on the bench without coming on.

When he has played, including the opening defeat to Mirassol in the Brazilian league, the response has been the same: low influence, boos from the stands and no sign of progress.

Crystal Palace loan may be cut short

Internally, Vasco believe the level shown is well below what they expected. While the club are not actively moving to end the loan early, the possibility has already been discussed. That alone underlines how badly the move has gone.

With the loan running only until July and no chance of a permanent stay, Brazilian media now treat França’s spell as a clear failure.

From the Crystal Palace perspective, the picture is uncomfortable. Instead of rebuilding confidence and attacking sharpness, the midfielder is returning with reduced status, no output and serious questions about where, or even if, he fits next.
