A goal up, then 2-1 down, then Tariq Lamptey fired home a crisp finish to secure a point after good work by Kaoru Mitoma and Joao Pedro.
It ended 2-2. Hurzeler was quickly into the media room afterwards.
The first question was from The Argus and it was quite upbeat.
“Brighton haven’t got good a record here so how pleased are you?”
It was immediately clear Hurzeler saw things differently. He wasn't really pleased at all.
He said: “When you come back, you should be happy and in the end I think we deserve more than a draw.
“I think we were the better team, created the better chances. We controlled the game in the first 20 to 25 minute particularly - very good.
“We dominated them, then we concede an easy goal after a set-piece and a penalty.”
And, of course, he was probably right – including as he spoke about chances to win 3-2.
But then Hurzeler had never been to Villa with Albion before and was taking that one game, that one experience, in isolation.
For those who have been travelling with the team down the years, it is not so easy. Memories come flooding back.
Strangely, before last season, perhaps the best memory we have of the place was a defeat as a massive Albion following saw their League One side go down 3-2 in the FA Cup.
Recently, Chris Hughton has spoken of the huge disappointment of missing out on the Championship title by drawing at Villa in 2017.
Jack Grealish’s very late shot somehow crept through to secure a 1-1 draw for the ten-man home side and gifted Newcastle the crown.
It was painful at the time – to see a group of players who had achieved so much heading to the team bus with hoods up, heads down and headphones on as if they had just been relegated.
Of course, that disappointment did not last. There was the Vegas trip and the parade on the seafront.
But it was actually good in a way to hear Hughton say how much it meant to miss out on the divisional title, as Glenn Murray had also told me a few years ago.
And then came the 2-1 defeat with Graham Potter having led through Adam Webster and seen Aaron Mooy sent off when the Seagulls had been playing so well.
Matt Targett scored four minutes into added time to give Villa the win.
What hurts more? Losing like that or being thumped 6-1 in 2023-24.
Both were worse than being the better side for much of Steven Gerrard’s first match as Villa boss and then losing 2-0 as the locals acclaimed their new hero.
Defeat at the end of the historic 2022-23 season did not really matter but it would have hurt Albion fans to see Alexis Mac Allister say goodbye.
At the time, we did not know whether both Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo would both go.
In that same media room at Villa, I asked Roberto De Zerbi and he said: “I think it is right they can leave, they can change teams and they can play in a level higher.”
So is it any wonder a comeback to draw 2-2 felt good last season?
The only Albion success there so far was behind closed doors.
You never know with a draw. You hear sometimes fans say “I’d take a point now” but you don’t know how that result will be arrived at.
But, if Hurzeler can't beat Crystal Palace, it would be very timely if he can be the man who can get results at Villa Park.
