Former Leeds player explains training under Marcelo Bielsa’s unique regime
Goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel joined Leeds from Ajax in 2020. While he never made a first-team appearance, his four years at the club left him with lasting stories. In a recent interview with Voetbal International, he recalled the unique atmosphere Bielsa created, especially during team meetings.
The former Ajax youth player described the distinct atmosphere of Bielsa’s sessions. He highlighted the memorable, and sometimes comical, language barrier that defined team meetings.
“That was quite different from what I was used to,” Van den Heuvel said.
“Bielsa did speak English… But actually, not at all. The meetings always involved an interpreter. Bielsa would sometimes be furious, and it was great that the interpreter sometimes kept talking so calmly. Or maybe the interpreter was trying to pretend he was furious too. That was absolutely fantastic.”
Heuvel’s words show how Bielsa’s influence touched every player at the club, from the stars on the pitch to the developing players training alongside them. For Leeds fans, Bielsa will always be a special manager.

Data suggests Leeds need a new goalkeeper
Although Van den Heuvel was unable to make a senior appearance during his time with the Whites, Daniel Farke would probably welcome the Dutchman back to Elland Road with open arms at this moment in time, given Leeds’ current goalkeeper crisis.
The 22-year-old has made six league appearances for Club Brugge in the Belgian Pro League this season, and if Van den Heuvel goes on to become a quality shot stopper, then Leeds will surely regret the decision to let him go.
So far this season, Leeds have conceded 43 Premier League goals
However, the data from Opta shows Leeds have an expected goals against of 36.1
This suggests that Farke’s side has let in many cheap goals this season, with most being attributed to whoever was playing in goal, out of Karl Darlow or Lucas Perri
One thing is certain, and it is that the 49ers need to find a suitable goalkeeper in the summer who is capable of helping Leeds stabilise themselves as a Premier League outfit.
