Rio Ferdinand has explained why there are guaranteed to be “risks” with whoever Manchester United choose to appoint as their new manager. United hired Michael Carrick last month as their interim head coach until the end of the season, to replace Ruben Amorim in the Old Trafford dugout.

United have won all four matches since Carrick went into the dugout, with victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

That run of form has seen United climb up to fourth place in the Premier League table and remain in control of their destiny in the race for Champions League qualification.

Carrick’s impact at United has already seen noise emerge about whether or not the former Middlesbrough boss deserves a chance to take the job on a permanent basis from the summer.

Ferdinand, however, has explained how there will be “risks” with whoever United choose to appoint, but has questioned suggestions that Carrick should not be in contention for the role.

“There’s risks with anyone who goes in there, no matter what Michael Carrick does, how well he does and if he got the job on the back of a great end to the season, there’s still risk.

“There’s an element of risk, but every one of the names that get thrown into the hat, there’s an element of risk with all of them.

“I don’t know in any walk of life where someone comes in, given the opportunity to do well and put their first foot forward for a job opportunity, they smash it.

“And hopefully he carries on, at the moment he’s smashing it - four wins out of four - and people are going, ‘No, he shouldn’t get it, though’. I don’t understand it.”

Despite winning his opening four games in charge of United, Carrick has insisted this week that he and the rest of the club will not be getting carried away, despite admitting to enjoying the emotions that have come with the job.

"It's a really easy thing to say, and listen, part of it, you've got to enjoy the buzz of winning. That's what we're in it for," Carrick said.

"You've got to manage the highs of it and you've got to enjoy initially the feeling of winning a game. You can't just be flat-lined the whole time, but certainly going into the next game, you've got to then regroup and prepare again for what's next.

"You definitely take the confidence and the feeling from the games that you've had knowing you can go into the next game with a little bit more feel-good factor about it, but I guess the big challenge is knowing what's got you there and all the hard work and the preparation and then what it takes to win a game of football at this level is tough, so never assuming the next one's just going to be alright.

"But you've still got to allow yourself to feel the little bits and waves of emotion with it. It’s all a little bit boring and pointless if you didn't really to be honest, winning games is what we're all striving for."
