How many points do Burnley need to avoid Premier League relegation?

We've taken a look at how many points Premier League teams have clocked up in each of the last five seasons.

Burnley are in real dire straits after their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United.

The Clarets went down 2-0 at home to their relegation rivals on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Crysencio Summerville and Taty Castellanos inside the opening 26 minutes, with Scott Parker’s men firing a blank despite attempting 18 shots throughout the match.

Burnley are now 11 points adrift of safety with just 13 games remaining, while it’s been over three long months since their last Premier League win. It’s going to take a miracle if we’re to see Premier League football at Turf Moor again next season, so we’ve taken a look at what it’s taken to survive over the past five seasons, and calculated what Parker’s side need to do in their remaining games to make that miracle happen.

How many points are needed for Premier League survival?

24/25 season

Leicester City - 25 points

Ipswich Town - 22 points

Southampton - 12 points

23/24 season

Luton Town - 26 points

Burnley - 24 points

Sheffield United - 16 points

22/23 season

Leicester City - 34 points

Leeds United - 31 points

Southampton - 25 points

21/22 season

Burnley - 35 points

Watford - 23 points

Norwich City - 22 points

20/21 season

Fulham - 28 points

West Bromwich Albion - 26 points

Sheffield United - 23 points

The average number of points needed to secure Premier League safety over the above period is 30.6, or 31 when rounded up. In that scenario, Burnley would need to take another 16 points from their last 13 games, more than doubling their points per game from 0.6 to 1.23. The Clarets would also be relying on West Ham only taking a maximum of eight points from their final 13 games despite winning three of their last four, while needing a seven-goal swing in goal difference. That’s outlandish for even the most optimistic supporter, given Burnley haven’t won any of their last 16 league matches dating back to late October.

The highest number of points needed to stay up during this period came in 2021/22, when Burnley themselves went down on 35 points. However, you look at it, with Burnley facing the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa over their final 13 games, things are really looking bleak. Home matches against Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton are now must-win, as are away trips to rivals like Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Wolves. And even then, Parker would be praying for a miracle.
