Newcastle United player ratings v Spurs: 'Unfortunate' 7/10 & 'composed' 8/10 amid VAR…

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Newcastle United half-time player ratings: Here’s how Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and co fared.

Eddie Howe made four changes to his side after the 3-2 defeat to Brentford on Saturday as Newcastle looked to end a run of three straight defeats.

Anthony Gordon came straight back into the side following a hamstring injury, leading the line in place of Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. Anthony Elanga, Dan Burn and Jacob Ramsey also came into the side for Jacob Murphy, Lewis Hall and Dan Burn.

Spurs have also been going through a rough spell themselves as they eyed their first Premier League win of 2026 and only their third home win in the Premier League all season.

Newcastle thought they’d taken the lead just before half-time as Joe Willock broke away and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out.

But The Magpies quickly bounced back from the setback with Malick Thiaw pouncing to score his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0 just before half-time.

Despite a dominant first half from Newcastle in terms of possession, chances and a disallowed goal, the sides went in goalless at the break.

Nick Pope - 5

Had very little to do with the exception of one comfortable claim.

Kieran Trippier - 7

Played some clever passes down the right and got stuck in. An improved display.

Malick Thiaw - 8

A comfortable evening so far and read things well before giving the side the lead with a good header and reactive finish on the rebound.

Sven Botman - 8

Made a few good blocks and challenges while also keeping his composure on the ball and distributing it well. Made a brilliant challenge just before half-time.

Dan Burn - 6

Deployed at left-back on his return to the starting line-up. Looked under threat of being exposed defensively but made a couple of good tackles to keep the home side at bay.

Bruno Guimaraes - 7

Saw plenty of the ball and helped Newcastle control the game in the middle of the park.

Joe Willock - 7

Dragged a shot narrowly wide from 20 yards inside the opening 10 minutes. Had a couple of bright moments but lacked ruthlessness in the final third until a brilliant strike just before half time which he was unfortunate to have ruled out. Then played a role in Thiaw’s goal moments later with a great cross.

Jacob Ramsey - 7

Saw a shot deflect over off Micky van de Ven. Came close again from the edge of the box just before the half-hour mark.

Anthony Elanga - 7

Put three good balls into the box early on, but they came to nothing. Put another low cross in for Harvey Barnes but it was easily dealt with. Lively.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Flicked Elanga’s low cross goalwards, but it was straight at Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs goal.

Straight back into the starting line-up after missing Saturday’s match. Led the line but barely had a touch.
