Newcastle United player ratings v Spurs: 8.5/10 'back to his best' & 'brilliant' Jacob Ramsey…

Eddie Howe named four changes from Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Brentford at St James’ Park. Dan Burn came into the back four at left-back in place of Lewis Hall and Jacob Ramsey replaced Sandro Tonali in midfield.

As he did for the recent 4-1 defeat at Liverpool, Howe left £124m duo Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa on the bench and deployed Anthony Gordon - back from injury - as the central striker. Anthony Elanga started on the right ahead of Jacob Murphy.

Newcastle dominated the first half but needed until stoppage time to make their pressure count when Malick Thiaw poked home at the second attempt from Joe Willock’s cross.

Minutes earlier, the Magpies were denied what they thought was the opener when Willock cut inside of Micky van de Ven to finish past Guglielmo Vicario, however VAR deemed he was narrowly offside when receiving the pass from Ramsey.

The visitors lost their momentum in the second half and Spurs equalised in the 63rd minute when Xavi Simons’ in-swinging corner was touched into the path of Archie Gray, who headed in with ease.

But the match was even for just four minutes as Ramsey put United back in front with a first-time finish from Gordon’s pass. It was Ramsey’s first goal since joining from Aston Villa last summer.

Here are our Newcastle United player ratings:

Had very little to do bar pick the ball out of his net for Spurs’ equaliser.

Back to his best after a few iffy showings of late. Stood up well to Dominic Solanke and reacted quickest at the back post to give Newcastle the lead.

3. Malick Thiaw - 8.5
