Man United fan without haircut for 493 days ‘heartbroken’ after Red Devils fall short against West Ham

Benjamin Sesko has struck a brilliant equaliser in stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for **Manchester United** at **West Ham** in the English Premier League, condemning viral sensation ‘The United Strand’ to wait a bit longer for a much-needed haircut.

If you’re just catching up, lifelong United fan Frank Ilett, otherwise known as ‘The United Strand’, made a decision in October 2024 that he wouldn’t get a haircut until his beloved team won five games in a row.

What started as a bit of fun amongst friends has grown into a global social media sensation, with Ilett now having millions of followers across the world wondering when his giant afro will finally get a trim.

Leading into the game against West Ham on Wednesday morning AEDT, it seemed like the time was going to arrive, with United on a four-game winning streak under interim manager Michael Carrick.

But in the end Carrick was moments away from what would have been his first loss as United coach as the clock ticked down at the London Stadium.

Sesko – who had been thrown on in an attempt to turn the game around after Tomas Soucek had given West Ham the lead – delivered with a spectacular flicked goal at the near post in the 96th minute.

That saw the game finish at 1-1, with Ilett initially saying he was “heartbroken” before striking a more sentimental tone.

“It’s tough. It’s tough to think, really. We go again, I guess,” Ilett said.

“The main positive is that the hair gets a bit longer for the Little Princess Trust and I can donate it, that’s what they want. It’s just tough, I really felt this was it.”

The draw ended Carrick’s four-game winning start, but kept United ahead of Chelsea in fourth place.

**Chelsea** blew a two-goal lead at home to draw 2-2 with **Leeds** as Liam Rosenior dropped points for the first time since taking over at Stamford Bridge.

Lukas Nmecha and Noah Okafor sealed the comeback for Leeds, which dealt a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification.

Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer from the penalty spot seemed to put Rosenior on course for a fifth-straight league win.

But Chelsea were stunned by two goals in the space of six minutes from in-form Leeds and had to settle for a point.

**Tottenham** are being sucked into a relegation battle after a 2-1 home loss to **Newcastle**.

After replacing Ange Postecoglou, the pressure is building on coach Thomas Frank, whose team is still to win a league game in 2026.

Newcastle ended a three-game losing run in the league, after Jacob Ramsey slid a winner into the bottom corner from close range in the 68th minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Malick Thiaw put Newcastle ahead in first-half stoppage time, before Archie Gray gave Spurs hope in the 64th minute, but Ramsey sealed the points for the visitors shortly afterwards.

**Bournemouth** scored twice in the space of three minutes to come back from a goal down and beat **Everton** 2-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Iliman Ndiaye’s penalty before the break gave the home team the lead, but Rayan leveled in the 61st and Amine Adli scored the winner three minutes later.
