West Ham United were denied all three points against Manchester United on Tuesday night by a late Benjamin Sesko equaliser
It was a night of mixed emotions for West Ham United on Tuesday as they drew 1-1 with Manchester United at the London Stadium.
The Hammers took a 1-0 lead through Tomas Soucek in the 50th minute and despite the Red Devils ended the game with 65 per cent possession, they were unable to fashion any genuine chances against a resolute Irons defence.
Casemiro did see a goal ruled out for offside and it then took a brilliant finish from Benjamin Sesko in the 96th minute to breach the West Ham goal, as the result puts the Hammers two points behind Nottingham Forest.
There can be plenty of pride for how West Ham performed, especially in defence while the frustration will be there because they could not see the game out.
Across London, there was only feelings of anger and frustration as Spurs lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle United. It leaves Thomas Frank’s side with just two wins from 13 Premier League home games and ramps up the pressure on the Dane.
They are now just five points above the Hammers - and that deficit would have been just three points had Sesko not scored late on for Michael Carrick’s side at the London Stadium.
Up next for West Ham in the Premier League is a home clash with Bournemouth before they travel to Liverpool and Fulham. They then host Manchester City and travel to Aston Villa.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have the not so small matter of the North London derby in their next Premier League outing before a trip to Fulham and a home game with Crystal Palace. Then head to Anfield to face Liverpool after that before taking on Nottingham Forest at home.
After Spurs’ defeat, Frank reflected: "I think that the players gave everything out there. Newcastle were better than us in the first half but we came back in the second half and equalised. After that, there was a missed pass and then they go the other way, we defend bad and go 2-1. We didn't have enough to come back into the game.
"It's fair to say we're a little bit hit by injuries. It's not a full team in confidence and flow and everything. Newcastle is more well built squad over the last years. We had an opportunity to get something out of the game but we didn't take it.
"It's a combination of many things. We had key players out and the confidence is not top so we turn backwards.
"We understand we are not in a top position and we need to do everything we can to get out.
"I understand the frustration and the easiest thing is to point at me. That's part of the job unfortunately. I will work day and night to turn this around but it is not just one person. There is no doubt we need to improve and I need to be part of that.”
Following the draw with the Red Devils, Nuno reflected: "Disappointed, all of us are to get this in the end. We had a good game, the boys worked hard but today it was not to be.
"It is a draw that gives us sadness but the way we competed today was really good.
"It is a mix of everything - the need that we have and the work from the boys today deserved so much more.
"We should be proud and this is the way, we must compete in every game like this.
"We should keep the standards, I said that to the boys and their faces are of a job well done. They hurt and it is painful.
"You look back to the game and it is always the final moments that you think you almost got across the line but then get a big punch in the stomach. It is painful."
