Liverpool have been handed a boost in their hopes of signing Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck in the summer transfer window. While the January transfer window may now be closed, work on potential transfers at Liverpool ahead of the summer window will be ongoing behind-the-scenes.

The Reds have been long-since linked with an interest in Scholotterbeck, who will have just one year left on his contract with Dortmund when the window next opens.

His contract situation and uncertainty over his future means Dortmund may be more open to a sale.

Liverpool have now received another boost with Bild reporting Dortmund are already eyeing up possible replacements. The German outlet claim that they have identified Bournemouth's Marco Senesi as a target.

The Argentine is out of contract at the Vitality Stadium at the end of the current season, meaning he is available on a free transfer. His contract situation also means that he is free to agree a pre-contract with an overseas club before the summer.

Dortmund have reportedly identified Senesi as an ideal replacement for Scholotterbeck should he leave. The fact that they are looking for replacements gives a green light for Liverpool to make a move.

Arne Slot's team are likely to look to bring in more defensive reinforcements in the summer months, having now missed out on a move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

The England international was on the edge of completing a move to Anfield last summer, only for the deal to fall through at the last minute.

Despite, again, being linked to Liverpool, the January transfer window saw him complete a switch to Manchester City. The Reds will, therefore, need to move on to alternative targets.

Dortmund are keen for Schlotterbeck to sign a new deal with the club, but he is yet to commit and revealed last month that he will make a decision before the summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, he said: "I've set a personal deadline for myself. I won't say when it is. Definitely before the summer, though.

"I feel comfortable here. It won't be an easy decision.

"I'm a gut-feeling kind of guy. I'll sit down with Dad and [brother] Keven and then I'll make a decision. I don't quite know right now how it'll turn out."
