There were yellow cards for seven players that day, including Max De Cuyper, Ferdi Kadioglu and Mats Wieffer.
The cup tie comes two years on from a 5-0 Albion win at Sheffield Unied in which the hosts had Mason Holdgate sent off by Attwell, helped by VAR, for an awful foul on Kaoru Mitoma.
Attwell’s most recent matches include Everton’s 2-1 win at Fulham and Arsenal’s 4-0 win at Leeds.
He was at Anfield recently when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Sunderland.
Attwell has a long history with Albion, dating back more than 18 years to a 2-2 draw at home to Carlisle in which George O’Callaghan was sent off.
He was in charge of a couple of memorable 2-1 wins at the Amex.
One was over Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship promotion season, in which Glenn Murray, Steven Fletcher and Sam Hutchison were all sent off.
The other was at home to Arsenal in the Seagulls’ first Prem season.
So far this term, across all competitions, he has refereed 18 games and shown 81 yellow cards, at an average of 4.5 per match, as well as two reds.
Attwell will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Lee Betts as Adam Herczeg takes fourth official duties.
