Everton slumped to another home defeat and it gets worse for David Moyes with Jake O’Brien now suspended.

Everton were their own worst enemy against Bournemouth as their woes at the Hill Dickinson Stadium continued in a 2-1 defeat that left David Moyes frustrated.

The Toffees manager saw the small margins fall against his side and chances to go more than one goal in front missed as the Cherries were let back into the game then allowed to win. Without a game for the next two weeks, he will also have to stew on the red card that saw 4/10 rated Jake O’Brien sent off in an eight-minute spell that saw two goals conceded and Everton go down to 10-men.

David Moyes on Jake O’Brien red card

Speaking after the game Moyes, surprisingly, praised his team and also gave his verdict on the decision that saw O’Brien walk: "I've not got a view. The referee has made his decision and he has chosen to give him a red card. We probably put more pressure on with 10 men than we did with 11. It's the referee's decision, he makes them.

On whether it is a disappointing result: "No, the players here are doing fantastically well but we are disappointed because it is a game that we could have won and we didn't. We had a couple of opportunities to make it 2-0 or 3-0 at one point and we didn't take them so you get punished when you don't do that."

O’Brien’s dismissal didn’t help matters, but it certainly wasn’t the reason why Everton dropped points at home again. Thierno Barry should have done better with a couple of chances and Bournemouth’s attacking threat proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Moyes will now have to do what he has done several times this season, make a change at right back. Thankfully though, thanks to O’Brien’s disciplinary record so far this season, Everton won’t have to cope without his services for too long.

How many games O’Brien will miss for Everton

Jake O'Brien is expected to miss one match for Everton following his straight red card against Bournemouth despite being dismissed for a professional foul (denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity) on Amine Adli during the second half of the 2-1 defeat at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Under standard Premier League rules, a red card for this specific offence typically carries a one-match suspension.

Everton now have a near two-week break before their next fixture, giving the club time to consider an appeal, though manager Moyes’ stance already suggests that any attempt would be futile given previous red cards already seen in the Premier League this season. O’Brien will miss Everton’s home game against Man United on the 23rd of February before returning to face Newcastle United five days later.
