Midfielder approves transfer to Newcastle United as free agent – Feels he can shine there

In 2025, Sport Witness covered West Ham’s interest in Lorenzo Pellegrini. Newcastle United have now emerged as a suitor for the Italian midfielder, but this time for free.

For months, the midfielder’s time in Rome appeared to be heading towards the end. Gian Piero Gasperini didn’t see value in using him, however, the 29-year-old has turned things around.

He scored against arch rivals Lazio in his first start of the season. This led to him becoming a regular part of the side, having now played 16 times in Serie A. He also has three goals to his name.

Despite this upturn, Pellegrini is yet to sign a new deal. His contract expires at the end of June, with Calciomercato IT covering his situation.

Lorenzo Pellegrini is on Newcastle United’s radar for next summer, when he’ll be available as a free agent.

Even if there is interest from Italian sides, the Premier League may be a likelier destination.

Pellegrini is said to have given his approval to a Newcastle United transfer. He feels the Magpies’ midfield three can help him play at his best, providing a system he’d be able to shine in.

The Italy international isn’t the same physically as he used to be, but he’s not far from it and still has reliable technical ability. He’s often played on the left flank for the national team, although is best as a number eight.

There’s a growing belief Pellegrini’s time at Roma will come to an end in the summer.

The Italian has now spent nine years in the current spell at Roma. Before joining Sassuolo in 2015, he had spent many years in the Giallorossi youth academy.

For a long while, he was also compared to Francesco Totti but consistency and injury problems derailed his progress. Now, his future is far from certain and a move to Newcastle United is possible.
