A minute’s applause normally takes place on the minute which corresponds with the age of the person’s passing, but with George living to the ripe old age of 99 this would not be possible.

The association stated: “Please, everyone who is at the game on Wednesday, join in the minute’s applause and appreciation on the 26th minute to George Forster.

“Without George, their wouldn't be a supporters association. His work and dedication over many decades should never go unnoticed.

“George will forever have a place in all Sunderland supporters’ hearts and the applause for him on Wednesday will not just be a tribute to him but a thank you.”

A photograph of George will be shown on the big screens at the Stadium of Light to correspond with the applause.

Following George’s passing the club paid a heartfelt tribute to his dedication to all things red and white.

A spokesperson said: “Everyone at Sunderland AFC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong supporter, George Forster.

“George was red and white to the core and became one of the most cherished figures in the club’s fan base. Rest in peace, George. You will never be forgotten.”
