Benjamin Sesko’s reaction to his equaliser showed why he’s an upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund

Benjamin Sesko saved the day and a point for Michael Carrick’s Man Utd against West Ham, but his reaction to it was far more notable.

The answer to West Ham’s stubborn low-block came in the form of a lethal Benjamin Sesko strike out of nowhere in injury time to salvage a 1-1 draw.

It ensured Michael Carrick stays unbeaten as Man Utd manager, while Sesko continues to win points for the club with his late heroics.

He was the saviour on the day, but his reaction to his injury-time equaliser brought back memories of Rasmus Hojlund.

Benjamin Sesko’s reaction to equaliser for Man Utd

Sesko has come into a hot streak since Ruben Amorim’s sacking, becoming Darren Fletcher’s talisman for two games before being an impact sub off the bench for Carrick.

He won two points for Man Utd against Fulham with a late winner, and has now saved another vs West Ham by equalising.

All this is despite not getting the starting nod, which already speaks volumes about his mentality.

However, anyone who still doubted his mentality after these heroics was given a firm reminder by the Slovenian in his post-match comments.

Sesko was asked about how it felt to be the late hero again, but instead of talking about his goal, he brushed it aside, stressing the disappointment at two dropped points instead.

He said: “Happy with my finish but not so happy with the draw. We deserved the win. The intensity was not where it should be. We were fighting.”

Sesko’s reaction is in sharp contrast to Rasmus Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund is loving life at Napoli, but it shouldn’t lead to any revisionism about his spell at Old Trafford, and Sesko is making sure of that.

Will Benjamin Sesko WIN the “Sesko vs Hojlund” debate?

Is there even a debate to be had or has he already won it?

Even when Sesko wasn’t scoring regularly as he is now, his general level of play was good, and most importantly, he didn’t let it affect him mentally.

Hojlund, on the other hand, played like the weight of the world was on his shoulders, and every game he didn’t score, he looked even more defeated.

A peek into his mental state was provided by Hojlund himself in April last season, when United dropped more points by drawing to Bournemouth.

Hojlund’s goal salvaged the draw that day, as Sesko’s did now, but the response couldn’t be more different.

While Sesko was disappointed with the result, Hojlund said after the game, “We wanted the win, but I needed that.”

Simply put, a player who feels that burdened by the weight of responsibility of scoring goals for United isn’t equipped mentally to do so for the long term.

To be fair to him, it could simply be a sign of him caring too much since he is a genuine fan of the club, but he was never going to succeed with that mentality.

Sesko is balancing that line perfectly, and his mental fortitude shines through regardless of whether he’s scoring or not.
