A man is set to stand trial charged with a woman's murder later this year after human remains were found inside a flat. George Gordon, 65, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon, Wednesday, accused of murdering 64-year-old Delia McInerney.
Police made the discovery after attending an address on Gerards Court in St Helens last month, having received reports of concern for a person’s safety. Gordon, of Gerards Court, has also been charged with preventing lawful and decent burial of a dead body, obstructing a coroner in the execution of their duty, three counts of fraud, said to have been committed between April 2023 and June 2025, and one of attempted theft in relation to Ms McInerney, of Douglas Road in Anfield.
Appearing via video link to HMP Liverpool today wearing a grey prison issue jumper and glasses while sporting short grey hair, he spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth and was not asked to enter any pleas. However, a trial, lasting four to six weeks, was scheduled for October 12 2026.
Gordon was further remanded into custody ahead of a further hearing on Friday this week. Adjourning the case, the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said: "George Gordon, I have made some orders today, principally concerning your remand status.
"On Friday, I anticipate that you will be asked to enter your pleas to the indictment. In the meantime, you must remain in custody. That concludes this hearing, and you are now free to go with the officers."
Gordon nodded and appeared to reply "thank you", although his microphone was muted. The ECHO previously reported that Merseyside Police attended the address in question at around 11.30pm on Thursday, January 8. A mobile police station and numerous police vehicles were seen in a car park outside the apartment block, with a white forensics tent having also been erected at the rear of the building.
CSI officers were spotted in the area, carrying items including a backpack, with searches having also been carried out at a property on Douglas Road over the past few weeks. Residents of Gerards Court told the ECHO that the street was "such a quiet row of houses", with one woman saying: “I saw the police, but I don’t like to read the bad news.
"It’s usually really quiet and peaceful around here. We’ve lived here around nine years, and there’s never been any bother. I know one person who lives in those flats, but it used to be a lot of older people. A lot of them have gone now I think and other people have moved in, but you still don’t really hear anything. It’s quite morbid to be honest.”
Gordon was then charged with Ms McInerney's murder over the weekend. A Merseyside Police spokesman said on Saturday: "A man has been charged with murder following the discovery of a woman's body in Gerards Court, Hawes Avenue, Clinkham Wood, St Helens, on Thursday, January 8. They have also formally identified the victim as 64-year-old Delia McInerney.
"Delia's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers at this tragic time. George Christopher Gordon, 65 years, of Gerards Court, Hawes Avenue, Clinkham Wood, St Helens, has been charged with murder, three counts of fraud by false representation contrary to Section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006 and theft."
The Crown Prosecution Service added in its own statement: "The CPS has today, February 7, charged George Christopher Gordon, 65, of 3 Gerards Court, St Helens with the murder of Delia McInerney, 64, of Douglas Road, Anfield, Liverpool on or before April 12 2023. George Christopher Gordon has also been charged with three counts of fraud and one count of theft in relation to Ms McInerney.
"The CPS made the decision to charge Mr Gordon after reviewing a file of evidence from Merseyside Police. The CPS had previously authorised two charges against George Christopher Gordon of prevention of a lawful and decent burial of a body and obstructing the coroner in the execution of their duty.
"The CPS reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Gordon are now active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
