Malick Thiaw broke the deadlock as Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 last night.

Malick Thiaw declared the love shown towards Eddie Howe after the win over Tottenham Hotspur “means so much” to the Newcastle United squad.

Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier pushed the Toon boss in front of the 3,000-strong away end after beating Spurs. Goals from Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey helped Newcastle win 2-1 and eased the pressure on Howe.

The dismal defeat to Brentford at the weekend resulted in some fans calling for his head on social media. Howe told reporters before the trip to North London that he remains the man to take Newcastle forward.

He said: "The fans, they've been always on top (of their game). They were always singing, they always support us. We just can be grateful for this kind of fans.

“You could see even the gaffer, he went in front and was celebrating with them. It means so much for us. I think they've been with us the whole time. They show us what you can do better.

“We're just a unit, in total, even if sometimes people think it's not like that, because the results were not there. But we've always been together, and we'll stick together until the end of the season."

When asked about his post-match celebrations, Howe told reporters: “It was the fact I was pushed to the front and had no choice, really. It's not really my style.

“I think it was probably more in recognition of the fact that we haven't won away enough. Our supporters have travelled far and wide to watch us and we feel like we've let them down on a few occasions.

“It's nice today that we get that moment to celebrate with them and not just me, but the players get a chance, some of the new players get a chance to experience the love from the fans. That was a special connection and I'm grateful it's still there.”
