As West Ham welcomed a suddenly red-hot, resurgent Manchester United to the London Stadium, the game brought together arguably the Premier League’s most in-form midfielders; Mateus Fernandes, and his namesake Bruno.
Those who were anticipating a clash of the playmaking titans – the master going eyeball-to-eyeball with his Portuguese protege – would have been left a little disappointed.
Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes was largely restricted to a peripheral role as Nuno Espirito Santo recalled Freddie Potts to pack the midfield. Mateus Fernandes has looked like a £100 million midfielder in the making during barnstorming recent performances against the likes of Sunderland, Tottenham and Burnley, but a tense encounter short on both chances and quality was not the occasion for West Ham United’s best midfielder since Declan Rice to spread his wings.

What can he still IMPROVE upon?

What Mateus Fernandes did do impressively, though, was clip Man United’s.

Mateus Fernandes showcases defensive qualities as West Ham frustrate Manchester United
During his formative days in English football with Southampton, Mateus Fernandes was labelled an ‘ultimate’ midfielder by ex-Saints skipper Jo Tessem. A ball-carrier, a playmaker, a tempo-setter but also a terrific ball-winner, Fernandes appears to unlock a new attribute every time he takes to the pitch.
Watch out goalkeepers up and down the land, Fernandes can score long-range screamers these days too.
But as Manchester United dominated 65 per cent of the possession, pinning West Ham back in the deepest of deep blocks, this was an encounter which asked something a little different of the Sporting Lisbon academy graduate.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES
We knew Fernandes could do the dirty work. He averages the most tackles per game of any West Ham player in the Premier League this season? But did he have the discipline, the positional awareness and the timing to help the home side clog up the passing lanes and keep Bruno, Kobbie Mainoo, Matheus Cunha and co from picking up possession between the lines?
Another question put to Fernandes, another resounding response.
From the very first minute, Fernandes could be seen sticking to Mainoo like a limpet on a rock. When Mainoo dropped deep to receive possession, Fernandes barely left his shadow in the opening exchanges.
As United turned the screw, Fernandes could be seen tracking back to make timely edge-of-the-box interceptions to stop Mainoo, Bruno and Casemiro from bursting into the box.
And, in what was a very rare counter-attack, it was Fernandes who put his body on the line – and ended up doubled over in pain – as Bryan Mbeumo threatened to breeze through.
Fernandes is convinced the Hammers will stay in the Premier League
Nobody in a West Ham shirt completed more than his five tackles. On a night when creativity took a back seat and both teams seemed to fear a defeat more than they craved a win, Fernandes did not record a single shot or even a single ‘key pass’.
But while Lucas Paqueta was often a liability in these sort of games, switching off, trying silly flicks in dangerous areas, Fernandes’ most diligent, most defensively-minded performance in a West Ham shirt only adds to the theory that the finest all-round midfield prospect in English football is not Elliott Anderson, Carlos Baleba or Adam Wharton, or even the masterful Mainoo himself.
Things are about to get VERY tough! 😟
How many points can you see us picking up here?
West Ham United's Portuguese head coach Nuno Espírito Santo reacts during the English Premier League football match between West Ham United and Manchester United at the London Stadium in east London on February 10, 2026.
Speaking to DAZN at full-time, Fernandes credited Nuno Espirito Santo for helping to unlock his gleaming potential in East London. Furthermore, he is convinced that West Ham ‘will stay in the Premier League’, provided they approach every remaining fixture with the same levels of dedication and discipline.
“We try to focus on what we control. We are aware that we are still in the relegation zone but, if we continue like this, we will stay in the Premier League,” said a supremely confident Fernandes.
“Step by step. Football changes very quickly. One week you win and you’re the best in the world, the next you lose and you’re not so good anymore.
“We are aware of what we have been doing, of the work we have been doing. We ended up stabilising and, if we continue like this, we gain confidence and things will happen naturally and we will start winning points.
“It’s not easy to play in the Premier League and we know that. Every game and every point matters.
“I think I’ve felt freer [since Nuno arrived],” the 22-year-old adds. “The manager has brought me stability. I’m playing in a position where I feel more comfortable, I have the ball, I gain confidence throughout the game.
“Today, I even felt I didn’t have a great game, but that’s football. Some days are better, others less good, but we continue this process always with a positive mentality.”
