Why history-making James Milner came on early at Aston Villa - Carlos Baleba incident explained

Aston Villa vs Brighton from Villa Park - Wednesday, 7.30pm

Brighton's James Milner equalled the all-time Premier League appearance record as he replaced Carlos Baleba at Aston Villa.

Milner, 40, was introduced as a substitute after just 22 minutes as Baleba was withdrawn.

It's now 653rd Premier League appearances for Milner, the joint-most in the Premier League's history alongside Gareth Barry.

Milner received a good reception from both sets of fans as he trotted on to the pitch at Villa Park.

It was a fitting venue to equal the record as Milner previously played for Aston Villa as part of his long career. He has also represented Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds.

The Premier League and Champions League winner remains a key part of Hurzeler's squad and offers a reliable back up to the erratic Baleba.

Baleba, who has struggled to find his best form this term, was hooked early as the Cameroon international picked up a second minute booking and Hurzeler clearly didn't trust the 22-year-old to remain on the pitch against Unai Emery's third placed team.

Baleba was seen holding his shirt over his face as he returned to the dugout.

Hurzeler made five changes following their painful 1-0 home defeat to old rivals Crystal Palace.

Joel Veltman, Jan Paul Van Hecke, Diego Gomez and Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck all returned to the starting XI.

Brighton XI: Verbruggen, Veltman, Van Hecke, Dunk, Kadioglu, Baleba, Hinshelwood, Gomez, Gross, Mitoma, Welbeck

Subs: Steele, Rutter, Minteh, Kostoulas, Milner, Boscagli, De Cuyper. O'Riley, Howell
