Liverpool’s playmaker admitted his side had to “bring everything” to beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light
Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz paid Sunderland a significant compliment after his side became the first team to win at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League this season.
Arne Slot’s side left Wearside with all three points courtesy of a second-half header from captain Virgil van Dijk, but the contest was far from straightforward despite Liverpool’s territorial control for large periods. Wirtz, who was central to much of Liverpool’s attacking threat, admitted afterwards that his team had to be at their very best to break down a stubborn Sunderland side.
“We had to bring everything on the pitch to get the win here. Everyone knows it is not easy. The first time they have had a defeat at home, and we are really happy to have the three points. Very important to us,” he told TNT Sports.
Liverpool enjoyed close to 70 per cent possession in the first half and gradually turned the screw, though clear-cut chances were initially limited by Sunderland’s compact defensive shape. When openings did arrive, Wirtz was at the heart of them.
Around the half-hour mark, the Germany international tested Robin Roefs with a driven effort from distance that was well parried away. Moments later, he rattled the post from inside the area before seeing a header kept out by the Sunderland goalkeeper. It was a reminder of his quality in tight spaces and his ability to influence games even when not on the scoresheet.
Sunderland, meanwhile, had to dig deep. Régis Le Bris’ side managed just a handful of touches in Liverpool’s penalty area before the break, yet they ensured the contest remained goalless at half-time through organisation and resilience.

The hosts emerged with greater intent after the interval. Captain Trai Hume fired over as Sunderland looked to relieve the pressure, but the breakthrough eventually arrived just after the hour. Mohamed Salah’s corner was met by Van Dijk, whose header found its way over the line with Habib Diarra unable to prevent it despite being stationed on the goal line. It was Van Dijk’s fourth goal of the season and ultimately proved decisive. Liverpool saw the game out professionally, though the victory was slightly overshadowed by a worrying injury to Wataru Endo.
The Japan international, making his first league start of the campaign while filling in at right-back, had impressed defensively and won more duels than any other player on the pitch before falling awkwardly on his ankle. He received lengthy treatment, including gas and air, before being stretchered off to applause from all sides of the ground. Joe Gomez replaced him as Liverpool protected their advantage.
Reflecting on his own performance, Wirtz added: “Every good game gives you confidence. When you get the ball you can sometimes do special things. It is always good to have these games because you cannot impact every game.”
The result marked only Liverpool’s second league win of 2026 and moved them to within two points of fifth-placed Chelsea, while Sunderland remain 11th as they regroup following the end of their impressive home run.
