Newcastle United latest news: Speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future at St James’ Park continues to rumble on.
Tonali has a contract at St James’ Park until 2029, but comments from his agent following a dramatic deadline day earlier this month has poured doubt on his long-term future on Tyneside. Tonali was briefly linked with a move to Arsenal on deadline day, although those reports were quickly shot down with Newcastle United very reluctant to sell the midfielder.
However, comments from Giuseppe Riso, Tonali’s agent, in the days after the winter transfer window have left the door open for a potential departure for the Italian international. In a fresh interview with Tuttosport, Riso admitted a decision will be made on Tonali’s future in the summer with fresh transfer talks expected.
Riso said: “Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League. These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do.
“There’s no preference at the moment. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow.
“Newcastle couldn’t let him go now, and there’s no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club. We’ll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer.”

Arsenal, the club linked with a shock move for Tonali just last week, will likely emerge as contenders for his signature again this summer. Manchester United, meanwhile, have also been credited with an interest in Tonali, with The Telegraph reporting that the 25-year-old is high on the Red Devils’ shortlist.
Fabrizio Romano drops Real Madrid transfer hint
Newcastle United will likely demand around £100m for Tonali this summer. That fee will rule out moves from all-but a handful of clubs in world football.
A return to Italy has long been pushed by Italian media, but it is highly unlikely that any Italian club would be able to afford that kind of transfer fee. The financial power of the Premier League means that the most likely destination for Tonali, should he leave Newcastle United this summer, appears to be in England.
However, there are a clutch of clubs in Europe that could afford a sizable fee for Tonali and Real Madrid are one of those teams. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 15-time champions of Europe will be in the market for a midfielder this summer: “It’s very clear that Real Madrid need to do something in midfield and their plan in summer 2026 is to try and help the rebuilding of something in defence and in midfield,” Romano said. “For sure, Real Madrid will be active in terms of targets in midfield and defence.”
PSG midfielder Vitinha, who netted at the Parc des Princes against Newcastle United last month, is on their reported list of targets, although Tonali may be viewed as a cheaper option than the Portuguese international if Madrid are unable to agree a deal with the Parisians for the midfielder.
