Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley & Joelinton - Newcastle United injury and expected return dates.

Eddie Howe and his squad united as one to bounce back from the heavy criticism they faced following the 3-2 defeat to Brentford at St James’ Park last Saturday.

But a positive evening in North London was tinged some concern after Guimaraes went off in stoppage time. Howe’s side were already without key midfielders in Lewis Miley and Joelinton.

Here’s Newcastle United’s injury list and expected return dates:

Bruno Guimaraes

Guimaraes, who had only just returned from four matches out with an ankle injury, was forced off in stoppage time against Spurs with a hamstring issue.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Providing an update after the game, Howe said: : “I'm not sure. He's a little bit worried. He said he’s not sure he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? Was it a muscle problem?

“It probably feels more of an injury to me but let's wait and see. We'll try and stay positive at this moment.”

Guimaraes then took to Instagram and wrote: “Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that he can be back soon.🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣”

Lewis Miley

Miley last featured in the 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain. He was on the bench for the following match against Liverpool but hasn’t been in the squad against Manchester City, Brentford and Spurs.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Speaking ahead of the Spurs game, Howe said: “I need to see today, we'll get another update on his progress. He's got a nasty bang to his leg, so it's like a dead leg that's dragged on a little bit longer than we thought, so we'll see how he is.”

After Miley missed the match, Howe said: “We're missing him massively. He's a huge player for us.”

Expected return date

Joelinton

Joelinton’s 250th appearance for Newcastle was cut short against Aston Villa after he went off with a groin issue at the beginning of the second-half.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “Yeah, so he flew on to Barcelona after the game to get an injection into his groin. It was good news with Joe. The specialist feels he only needs one injection and that means that his return could be quite quick.

“So we're looking at weeks, not months. Slightly unsure as to the exact date yet, but positive news.”

Expected return date

Qarabag (A) 18/02.

Tino Livramento

Livramento was forced off during the recent FA Cup third round penalty shootout win over AFC Bournemouth with a hamstring injury.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “He's doing well. I believe he's having a scan today, a second scan to see the progress of his hamstring. Fingers crossed it's good news and I think if it is, he'll be back running outside.

“I think we're still probably five to six weeks away. We're looking at an early March return, providing everything goes well.”

Expected return date

Manchester United (H) 04/03.

Fabian Schar

Schar has undergone surgery to repair the ankle ligament damage he sustained in the 4-3 comeback victory over Leeds United on January 7.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

Howe said: “He had a successful surgery yesterday, which is great news. Everything went according to plan. I think, difficult to give a definitive [date] but roughly around three months, I think, will be the diagnosis that we'll work towards if it's any quicker than great.

“But I think we need to give Fabian now the time to recover, it's quite a serious injury.”

Expected return date

April 2026.

Emil Krafth

Krafth picked up a knee injury on international duty with Sweden in November and hasn’t played since.

What’s Eddie Howe said?

“He's a big miss for us at the moment. No, there's no major update. He's trying to come back from a knee problem. He's not feeling absolutely at his best currently. Day-to-day, he feels slightly different, so, I've got no definitive return date for him.

“We're taking it day-by-day, hoping that he can improve and we can see him back very quickly. He's always been such a reliable performer for us. As you say, you're quite right, different positions, he gives the versatility that we need.

“So, we're desperate for him back. But we'll just have to wait and see how long that takes.”
