Harvey Barnes is Newcastle United’s top scorer this season with 12 goals across all competitions.

Harvey Barnes has opened up about fighting his way into the Newcastle United starting line-up.

For much of his time on Tyneside, the 28-year-old has been viewed as a “super sub” for being able to impact games from the bench. However, 22 of his 39 appearances this season have come as a starter.

Barnes has repaid Eddie Howe’s faith with 12 goals across all competitions - putting him top of Newcastle’s scoring charts. He has done so while being asked to operate on both flanks, with Anthony Gordon preferring to nail down the left.

‘You have to compete’ - Harvey Barnes

Speaking to TNT Sports, Barnes discussed his journey and best position at Newcastle. He said: “You know you’re not going to walk straight into the team. You have to compete, you have to fight and earn your place. Quite a few of my goals have come from off the bench, with more from starting (in the team) the following year. It’s that natural progression of trying to find your feet a bit, then the following year getting that reward.

“This year it has all gone really well. The left is naturally where I’ve played most of my career and where I prefer playing but this year, more than any other, I’ve been on the right. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, it’s all about adapting. It’s a similar position but it’s different in this team.

“On the right you’re creating more and looking for crosses whereas, on the left, I’m more often than not trying to get a shot off.”

Harvey Barnes makes Newcastle United trophy vow

Barnes has also promised Toon fans that he will do everything possible to deliver another trophy. He added: “It’s exciting. We have a few months left of the season. We’d like to be a little bit higher (in the league). Hopefully we can finish this season on a high and (win) a bit of silverware.

“Last year, as players, we knew how much it meant but probably didn’t know until we achieved it and saw the reaction around the city. We just want to give them more of that and, as players, you want to achieve as much as you can as well.”

Eddie Howe on Eddie Howe impact

Howe told TNT Sports how important Barnes has become for the Magpies. He said: “Harvey has done really well for us. Not just this season, but in previous seasons. He’s always been a goalscorer and creator. He is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment and really enjoying his football.

“He’s playing different positions and showing a bit of versatility which has been important to us. He is another great lad, another player who wants to do well, impress and loves being here.”
