Aston Villa earned a crucial Premier League victory on Wednesday night as Unai Emery’s side edged past Brighton 1-0.
Leon Bailey’s corner was turned in off Jack Hinshelwood after Tyrone Mings met the delivery at the front post.
In a match lacking quality, Villa managed to get over the line, moving six points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea.
Here are the talking points from Villa’s win…
A win was the order of the day
Villa have now won nine of their 14 Premier League games against Brighton and, since their return to the top flight in 2019, boast their joint-most wins against the Seagulls.
Their performances can improve - and they need to - but nothing boosts a squad’s confidence quite like earning an important three points.
On the balance of play against Brighton, a draw would have been fair, just as it was when Villa faced Everton and Brentford. But instead of conceding first, Villa scored, giving them the key edge.

Now six wins away from 68 points, Villa must focus on themselves and ignore what is happening beneath them - they are being chased, not doing the chasing, with 12 matches remaining.
Brighton, for their part, struggled for creativity like Villa and are in a terrible run of form, having now won just one of their last 13 league matches.
"Very important. We needed to win and compete and respect them like we did,” Villa boss Emery told the BBC after full-time.
"The match was tight and for 90 minutes equal in some ways but I think we created the most chances and more times we got into their box.
"We recovered our energy and confidence and after we lost our last two matches in the Premier League we needed this victory.
"We now need to put this competition to the back of our minds until we play again in 10 days against Leeds. Now we try to focus on the FA Cup on Saturday."

Mings marks his 200th appearance
It was fitting that Mings was the player celebrating Villa’s late goal on what marked his 200th appearance for the club.
Of course, the goal credit was officially awarded to Hinshelwood, but the centre-back won’t soon forget the feeling of celebrating with the Holte End in that pure, unforgettable moment.
"Who decides this? It probably wasn't going on target, but it felt like I glanced it towards goal,” Mings joked on TNT Sports afterwards. “I told Leon Bailey to put the cross to the front post.
"Games are so tight, if it was 1-0 to them, everyone would say we were rubbish, but fortunately we got the right result tonight.
"Brighton are a team that deserve more points than they have, they are a great footballing team. We knew it would be a difficult game and we have not been great here in recent weeks. Every team you face is difficult."
Speaking about his landmark appearance, Mings said: "From when I arrived, we have been on such an amazing journey and to be here now, we feel like we deserve it. We had incremental progress."
Bailey added: "Tyrone Mings is massive for us, I have been with him for five years and everyone can see his commitment to the club. He is so important to this team, we can all see it."

Emery's defensive options
In the end, Mings’ inclusion in the starting XI was justified, as he played a key role in the winning goal.
While he defended well alongside Ezri Konsa, Villa lacked Pau Torres’ ability to control the game and pierce through the lines.
Interestingly, Emery has now started Mings twice in the league, and apart from not closing Rayan down quickly enough at Bournemouth, he has been solid.
As Emery explained after full-time, both Mings and Torres bring different qualities to the team.
“Very important, both players. We have been successful through Mings and also been successful through Torres,” he said.
“They are different but we can exploit both of their qualities. Tyrone Mings is so strong and needs to improve in build-up, like he is.
“Torres is strong in the build-up, but can improve his power in the duels. They are both very important and how they have performed is really fantastic.”
Villa's crucial fortnight ahead
Two home matches down, two to go this month. After Villa’s FA Cup tie against Newcastle, another key league game awaits when Leeds visit Villa Park.
Besides being in the draw for the fifth round, it’s important for Villa to keep building momentum, especially after winning just one of their five league matches before Wednesday night.
Following the Leeds game, Villa travel to bottom club Wolves. On paper, it may look like a straightforward fixture, but it won’t be easy.
If Villa can secure maximum points from Wednesday until the end of the month, they would be just four wins away from 68 points - enough to finish in the top five in five of the last six seasons.
I asked Emery in his pre-match press conference about the atmosphere at Villa Park, which is rightly regarded as one of the best in the country.
However, when things aren’t going to plan, or the players aren’t performing at their best, the atmosphere can feel different. Against Brighton, for large parts of the game, it was flat both on the pitch and in the stands. There are many reasons for that, which we discussed on Claret & Blue (watch here) earlier this week, but it remains a concern.
In the 20th minute against Brighton, goalkeeper Martinez waved his arms toward all four stands, asking for more noise and support. That came after he pinged the ball to Jadon Sancho, who then helped Morgan Rogers win a corner.
Emery didn’t entirely agree that Villa Park’s atmosphere changes based on the play on the pitch - but that’s true at most clubs. The difference for Villa, however, is that every fan knows just how much of a 12th man a rocking Villa Park can be.
Even if Villa pick up only a handful of points away from home for the rest of the season, a strong home record could still be enough to secure a Champions League spot.
