Newcastle United transfers: Reports from Italy have linked Newcastle with a free transfer for one of Sandro Tonali’s international teammates.
Newcastle United are looking to bounce back from a questionable couple of transfer windows and strike quickly in the summer.
But there’s still plenty that remains up in the air regarding the position of the team come the end of the season. The Magpies are currently competing in the Champions League but sit 10th in the Premier League table, eight points off the top five with 12 games left to play.
Successive seasons of Champions League football are unlikely for Eddie Howe’s side as things stand. But European qualification via the Europa League or Conference League remains a realistic possibility.
Newcastle United expecting another busy summer
There is also uncertainty on the transfer front with key midfielder Sandro Tonali having further doubt cast over his future this month. Reports emerged on deadline day claiming Tonali had been offered to Arsenal by one of his representatives.
While Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso was quick to play down the reports, he did add fuel to the speculation by claiming talks over Tonali’s future at Newcastle were set to take place.
And as a potential departure looms for Tonali this summer, one of his Italy teammates has been linked with a ‘sensational’ move to Newcastle this summer in the Italian media. Of course, this is the same Italian media that have continually linked Tonali with a return to Serie A ever since he stepped foot in Newcastle, but let’s see what they have to say.
Italian media claim midfielder has given green light for NUFC free transfer
CalcioMercato have claimed AS Roma attacking midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has ‘given his approval’ to complete a summer transfer to Newcastle as a free agent once his contract at the Italian club expires on June 30.
Talks regarding a new deal for the 29-year-old have stalled with a Premier League move now said to be ‘most likely’.
Pellegrini has spent the last nine seasons at Roma, scoring 59 goals in 337 appearances. So far this campaign, the 36-time Italy international midfielder has scored four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions.
He has also been linked with a move to the Premier League with Leeds United. Newcastle will be hoping to secure European football to help acquire top targets in the summer after failing to land several last year, despite the so-called pull of Champions League football.
But The Gazette understands Pellegrini is not under serious consideration for a move to Newcastle this summer, with the reports emerging from Italy simply serving the purpose of drumming up interest and talk around the player to help secure a summer move or even, a new contract at Roma.
