Thomas Tuchel is expected to sign a new contract to remain as England manager until 2028. Tuchel, 52, is one United's shortlist for their next permanent boss but he's set to stay in the Wembley dugout beyond the World Cup.
The German's current deal is due to expire at the end of this summer's tournament. But report that Tuchel has agreed to stay and could confirm the news before the draw for the 2025-26 Nations League campaign at 5pm on Thursday.
Tuchel's extension will see him remain in charge for England's 'home' European Championship in 2028. England are co-hosting the tournament alongside Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, with both semi-finals and the final due to be played at Wembley.
United are big admirers of Tuchel, who's further enhanced his reputation during his 13 months in charge of England, his first international role. Old Trafford chiefs held talks with the former manager in 2024 and were expected to consider him again in the coming weeks, with Michael Carrick currently in the hot seat on an interim basis.
Tuchel was also among the favourites to take the job at the end of this season. A number of other heavyweight clubs could have managerial vacancies in the summer, too, including , and Paris Saint-Germain, who he managed between 2018 and 2020.
The ex-Bayern Munich, and Mainz boss led England to a perfect qualification campaign, winning all 10 of their matches to book their ticket to North America in style. Tuchel's side will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L.
In November, Tuchel expressed an interesting in signing a new deal with the FA. "I know from many years in professional and club football what makes me happy and what brings the best out of me," the 52-year-old said.
"I feel re-energised and I love to work with the players and be close to the . I also know the level of support and trust I have."
The last time an England manager had his contract extended before a World Cup was in 2010. handed Fabio Capello a new deal just days before the tournament kicked off in and ultimately ill-fated decision.
