Stat Attack – Everton v Bournemouth

Written by Matt Stevenson

Here is the xG from the Everton game, a game that was fits and starts. The first 28 minutes were very dull, then a speculative free kick from Garner (rated 1 in 36) bounced in front of Petrovic, who fumbled it into the path of the onrushing Barry, who skewed it wide (68%). A minute later, Petrovic redeemed himself with a good save from Ndiaye from a wide angle (1 in 10) that stayed out with the help of the post. Five minutes later, AFCB had their first real attempt, a shot from Evanilson (1 in 10) that deflected weakly to Pickford. Then, after 40 minutes, Everton were awarded a penalty. Rayan attempted to dribble the ball out from the back instead of playing it back to Hill, and Branthwaite nipped in and was brought down. Ndiaye scored the penalty (78%). At half time, the xG was Everton 1.64, AFCB 0.23.

The second half saw Everton have an early chance as Petrovic underhit a pass and Ndiaye intercepted, Hill cleared the cross, but Dewsbury Hall disposed of Christie and Hill headed his shot clear (1 in 6). Six minutes later, Barry appeared to have a great chance following a Ndiaye cross, but Jimenez did excellently to block it (1 in 6). Soon after, there was a penalty appeal for AFCB as Rayan and Mykolenko tangled, but it wasn’t given, although sometimes they are. Then there were 10 minutes to turn the tide in our favour, first a goal for Rayan, as Truffert surprised the opposition by crossing with his right foot (3 in 10). Three minutes later, it was 2-1, with Hill heading Scott’s cross across to Adli to head home (7 in 10). The big concern was Unal attempting to head the ball, having started in an offside position, and these are often ruled out, but stood on this occasion. Shortly after, Kroupi threaded a good ball behind the defence for Adli to chase. O’Brien brought him down and was sent off. At this point, we should have dominated the game, but the last 18 minutes were all Everton, with no attempts for AFCB versus 10 for the hosts. 4 were moderate chances (Beto heading at Petrovic (1 in 10), Braithwaite heading over (1 in 7), and in injury time headers from Harrison, one blocked, one saved (both 1 in 6), and 1 was a big chance, in the 88th minute from a Tarkowski header. It was an aerial assault, but we held out. At the final whistle, the xG was Everton 2.94, AFCB 1.34, with Understat having a smaller margin: Everton 2.33, AFCB 1.41.

There were two changes from the A Villa game, with Toth (27) making his starting (and home) debut, replacing Cook and Christie (10) replacing Kroupi. The first change was in the 58th minute (at 1-0 down) when Toth and Evanilson (9) were replaced by Kroupi (22) and Unal (26) in like-for-like changes. In the 80th minute (at 2-1 up) Christie and Adli (23) were replaced by Cook (4) and Brooks (7). The average positions (particularly of Brooks) show how much pressure the 10-men put us under. In injury time, Rayan (37) was replaced, bringing on the old head of Smith (15) to try and settle it down, with Jimenez moving slightly further forward.
