Newcastle United latest news: A major contract update has provided a hint on Eddie Howe’s long-term future at Newcastle United.
Thomas Tuchel will stay on as England manager past this summer’s World Cup after signing an extension to his contract with the FA.
Tuchel was appointed as England manager in late-2024, before taking up the reins in 2025. The German has been tasked with leading England to victory in this summer’s World Cup and was handed just an 18-month contract by the FA.
However, the FA confirmed on Thursday morning have confirmed that Tuchel has signed terms to keep him in the role until 2028. The European Championship that summer will be jointly hosted by England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
Tuchel’s decision to remain as England boss comes amid speculation that Eddie Howe would have been among the frontrunners to replace him this summer if he left when his initial 18-month contract had expired. Howe was briefly linked with becoming Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor before Tuchel was named as England manager just over a year ago.
Speaking in 2024 about the potential of being England manager in the future, Howe told Gary Neville on the Overlap: “It's a strange one for me because, when I'm in this mode, I'm totally oblivious to everything. I’m so focused on the day-to-day part, it's not a cliched answer it's the truth. I don't lift my head and see what is going on or what people say.
“Talking on the national team, my big memories were watching you [Neville] play for England. That era was very much me in my early years, forming a love for England and wanting them to do well, having that feeling of devastation when we didn’t quite make it over the line.

“I loved that feeling of watching the national team, I was immersed in it. I love England and I hope they go on to win the Euros this summer, and I think they can.
“I love Gareth and I’ve got a real determination for England to win. I’ve never really thought about international football. Who knows what will happen in the future.”
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United future
Howe’s future at Newcastle United, whilst never under any uncertainty from those above him, has come into focus in recent weeks amid a slide in results on the pitch for his team. The Magpies course corrected somewhat on Tuesday night with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur, but they still trail their main rivals for European qualification and have ground to make up between now and May if they want to be playing continental football again next season.
Howe retains the support of the board at the club, with David Hopkinson admitting as much during a revealing interview with Talk Sport last week, but United’s head coach was asked questions about his future on Tyneside earlier this week: “There's no doubt in my mind,” he responded when asked if he was the right man for the job. “That's why I'm sat here. If there was, then I wouldn't be, because as I said, the club's the most important thing.
“So I'd never put myself before the club if I didn't think I was the correct man to take the team forward and I could give the players what they need, then I would step aside and let someone else do it.”
