Arne Engels is expected to be the subject of strong transfer interest in the summer
Premier League side Nottingham Forest are reportedly still keen on signing Celtic midfielder Arne Engels in the summer window after failing in their attempt to secure a late winter move for the Belgian international.
Football Insider understands that the Scottish champions turned down as many as three offers from the City Ground club to try and secure the Celtic playmaker, as Martin O’Neill sent out a real statement of intent to rivals Hearts and Rangers about the club’s desire to retain their title.
Engels joined Celtic for £11m from German club Augsburg in August 2024 and has played 89 times for the Glasgow club since the start of last season.
Celtic to face renewed interest in midfielder
Celtic dismissed Forest’s attempts to sign the 22-year-old due to not having adequate time to bring in a replacement and their desire to try and bridge the gap between themselves and league leaders Hearts.
They could, however, consider offers in the summer should Forest return with an improved offer, particularly if the former Augsburg playmaker decides he’s ready for a new challenge.
Engels has played 37 times across all competitions so far this season, scoring five goals in that time and contributing seven assists. He’s started every Premiership match since Martin O’Neill replaced Wilfried Nancy and is expected to play a pivotal role between now and the end of the campaign.
Celtic are in a strong position when it comes to Engels transfer discussions
Football Insider claim Engels is still happy at Celtic despite speculation surrounding his future. He did not push for a move during the winter window and is believed to be settled at Parkhead at the moment.
The youngster is also under contract until 2028, leaving Celtic in a healthy position when it comes to any potential negotiations as the player will still have two years to run on his deal when the summer comes round.
Any sale involving Engels based on the current figures mentioned appears likely to make him one of the club’s most expensive players.
