Shay Given reveals who should take the blame after Tottenham’s horrific run of form in the PL

Tottenham decided to part ways with Thomas Frank after the Newcastle United defeat.

Thomas Frank was confident that he would stay at Tottenham Hotspur for next weekend’s North London derby after tasting defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday. However, the Lewis Family acted in the opposite direction and dismissed him.

The Dane was put out of his misery after eight months in charge of the Lilywhites. A shocking campaign meant Tottenham fans wanted Thomas Frank gone after their relationship had soured in recent months. With the North London club seemingly in a relegation battle, the hierarchy decided to end his time at the club.

Frank has left Tottenham languishing 16th in the table, five points above the dreaded drop zone. He has been extremely unlucky with the piling of injuries in recent months, forcing him to patch up his starting XI for several games.

Shay Given says Tottenham players must take more responsibility for the terrible run of form

Frank has finally been sacked by Spurs for failing to get the best out of the players at his disposal. He could not help them progress after taking the job last June. Neither was the Dane entertaining the fans with an exciting, front-footed style of football, nor getting results with his rigid, pragmatic philosophy.

While the 52-year-old has paid the price for his own doings, former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given thinks the Tottenham players must take more responsibility for this wretched run of form that sees them in a potential relegation battle

“It is easy to blame Thomas Frank and the recruitment,” Shay Given said on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t BBC Sport).

“You don’t want to get relegated. This wouldn’t be a fantastic place in the Championship, that’s for sure.

“I think it is too easy to just blame the manager. The players have to stand up and think “Am I bringing enough to this football club?” I don’t think enough of them are at the minute.”

Tottenham players have let down another manager

For the second year running, Spurs run the risk of finishing deep in the bottom half. They were spared the blushes in 2024-25 because the three relegated sides were clearly not of the level to even battle for safety, but the Premier League is now different this term.

After only winning the Europa League in May 2025, the capital club has surprisingly regressed and fallen into disarray, costing the highly rated Frank his job. Truth be told, Tottenham has been a graveyard for top managers for years now. Frank is the latest fall guy, and while there were several reasons behind his axing, the players simply cannot and must not escape the blame.

They have let down another manager, after the majority of the squad stopped meeting their standards last season under Ange Postecoglou. And the Lilywhites are now looking for their third boss in eight months, which simply shows how much transformation the club has to go through to get back to challenging for major honours.
