Newcastle United have clarity on the England x Eddie Howe drama after Thomas Tuchel extended his contract.

Thomas Tuchel has vowed to “make the country proud” after extending his England contract until Euro 2028.

Appointed last January, the German arrived on a short-term deal with the sole purpose of winning the upcoming World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s exit left the FA on the hunt for their first manager in eight years.

Eddie Howe - as the standout English candidate - emerged as a potential front-runner. The summer of 2024 saw the 48-year-old face awkward questions on his Newcastle United future.

Eddie Howe’s ambiguous comments

Following Gareth Southgate’s resignation, Howe gave an ambiguous answer on his position at the Magpies. He told reporters: “I absolutely want to stay at Newcastle but it has to be right for me and the club.

“There’s absolutely no point in me saying I’m happy staying if the dynamic isn’t right. I absolutely love the club. I love the supporters. I love where I am at in my career. There is no better place for me to be. That is how I feel.”

Thomas Tuchel extends England contract

There had been suggestions Howe could become the England manager after the World Cup. A poor run of form at Newcastle has led to a minority of fans calling for the manager’s head on social media.

However, the FA have backed Tuchel with a fresh deal until Euro 2028 - a tournament England will host alongside other home nations. Speaking after extending his stay, the Three Lions boss said: “I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup.

“It is an incredible opportunity and we are going to do our very best to make the country proud. I have had so much support from Mark, all my colleagues at the FA and from fans wherever I go that I did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job. Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”
