After **West Ham**’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, the Hammers head coach Nuno Espírito Santo spoke to the press.
Going into the game, West Ham sat three points inside the relegation zone. A win would’ve drawn them level on 26 points with 17th place Nottingham Forest.
After a rather even first half, the East London club broke the deadlock with 50 minutes played. **Jarrod Bowen**’s low cross was poked home by Tomáš Souček.
It looked as though the Hammers were going to hold onto the three points. However, in the 96th minute, **Bryan Mbeumo**’s cross was spectacularly flicked home by Benjamin Šeško.
The result means West Ham are now two points behind Nottingham Forest, who still have to face bottom-of-the-table Wolves, so the gap could become five points.
Nuno commented on how it was a tough result to take, but ensured that if they play like that every week, they’ll survive.
“Till the end, they gave a good game. It was a good game, but it’s tough to take. In the last moments for us and especially for our fans who were there to support us until the end, and to take this final blow that is going to be painful.
“I think we are in the right way. We are competing well, improved a lot of aspects of our game. We should improve more things. There are moments when, today, with the space that was, we should kill the game and try to avoid the suffering in the last minutes.
“Overall, I think it was a positive performance from the boys, hard work, committed. We contained a very tough team that is in a good dynamic. We didn’t allow too many situations. We had good combinations. We scored. The way we came in the second half was really positive. The desire of the boys, the commitment to go and take the game, I cannot say anything about their hard work. It’s tough to take.
“When you go to wide areas, you always have the threat of our midfield, especially Tomáš [Souček] , going into the box. He takes advantage of the space, and we had a couple more, but a special thank you to our fans who were there for us today. We’re disappointed not to give them this huge joy.
“Since the beginning of the game, the fans were there for us, they were supportive, understanding that we were playing a good team that has been in a good dynamic and we were containing them, blocking them at the same time creating situations, so I think we showed everybody today that we have to keep on going, keep believing because competing like this we’re going to be okay.”
