Sunderland player 'injured again', Black Cats wait to find out 'extent' of problem - reports

Sunderland defender Omar Alderete was forced off during Wednesday’s defeat against Liverpool.

Sunderland defender Omar Alderete was forced off due to an apparent injury issue in the latter stages of Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, with reports in his native Paraguay suggesting that he could be suffering from a muscular complaint.

The centre-back started the midweek contest at the Stadium of Light against the defending Premier League champions, but was withdrawn in the 80th minute, and looked to be limping as he left the pitch to be replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida.

Since then, neither Sunderland nor head coach Regis Le Bris have provided any kind of concrete update on Alderete’s fitness, but that hasn’t prevented speculation from mounting back in his home country.

What has been said about Sunderland defender Omar Alderete?

Firstly, Paraguayan outlet Versus have written a report on the 29-year-old, and mention that he is “injured again” in their headline. It is suggested that Alderete also struggled with muscle discomfort during the latter stages of this month’s 3-0 victory over Burnley - a game in which he was substituted after 86 minutes.

Fellow South American outlet Unicanal have backed up Versus’ claim, taking to X to share a further update on the centre-back’s situation. It is understood that Alderete will now undergo examinations on his issue, with Sunderland facing a nervy wait to determine the “extent of the injury”.

So far this season, the defender, who arrived from La Liga outfit Getafe during the summer transfer window, has made 22 appearances in the Premier League, but did miss a spell after suffering a concussion against Wolves in October. Of the four matches Alderete did not play, Sunderland won one, drew two, and lost one.

What did Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris say about his side’s performance against Liverpool?

Speaking after the final whistle on Wednesday, Sunderland boss Le Bris was eager to focus on the good work that his side have done already this season, and as well as outlining his desire for the Black Cats to keep building the Stadium of Light’s reputation as a fortress after losing their home match of the campaign.

He said: "I want to take the positive - to have that record was outstanding. It's done and now we want to keep this place hard to play and I think that will be the case for the future as well. I think we showed it this evening. It wasn't easy for Liverpool to win here, so it's the most important thing for me. We want to be brave, we want to be intense, we want to be hard to play, and it was the case. After that, the result is the result. You can't control everything."

Le Bris also said his side had to stay resilient despite losing back-to-back games, having suffered a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon too. He added: "We have to keep the same mentality. The journey in the Premier League, especially for a newly promoted side, it's not easy. It's normal to struggle at times, especially against the best teams in this league. Resilience is key, and I think so far we showed that we have this quality."
