Daniel Farke owes Leeds United fans an apology as Liverpool eye £26m move for academy graduate

Charlie Cresswell

There are many players that Leeds United fans would like to have seen stay at the club in recent years. From Raphinha to Kalvin Phillips, the club has had so many great players who have had to leave for one reason or another.

Recent seasons getting relegated and going down to the Championship have also seen some unique talents sold. Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray all departed when the club failed to reach the Premier League in 2024.

Up until this season, the fanbase has still been wishing for the return of some players including Kalvin Phillips, who recently joined Sheffield United in the Championship.

Charlie Cresswell linked with Liverpool move

Daniel Farke has been in charge at Leeds United for three years and many fans will have a good rating of him. However, he is not without flaws, and dealing with young players has been a problem for him sometimes. Outside Archie Gray, the Leeds boss has had a lot of issues and incidents with young players looking for playing time. The most memorable one that stands out is Charlie Cresswell.

One of the highest rated products to come from Thorp Arch broke into the Leeds first team when they were in the Premier League. When the team was relegated, he was on loan at Milwall in the Championship having an excellent season. Unfortunately for him, on his return, Daniel Farke was not a fan and after just nine appearances in the 2023/24 season Charlie Cresswell got a move to Toulouse.

According to SportsBoom, the defender has now been linked with a move to Liverpool this summer. The Reds are keen on rejuvinating their defence after this season with the former Leeds man high on the shortlist.

Defender has shown he would have been good enough for Leeds United

It was understandable that under Farke, Charlie Cresswell could not break into the team because of Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk. And ultimately a move away from Leeds did him a world of good. But seeing how he has become one of the highest-rated young defenders in Europe will definitely rub fans the wrong way. He has shown his ability and talent in a top league, and will possibly move to a bigger club this summer. Seeing all this unfold should show that Daniel Farke was wrong to keep the youngster out of the first team; sometimes managing a player properly can prevent situations like that.
