Thomas Tuchel England extension silences Eddie Howe talk

The FA have announced an extension on the contract of Thomas Tuchel as England manager.

The former Chelsea boss was originally given an 18 months deal back in January 2025.

That deal scheduled to run out after the 2026 World Cup finals.

Not sure why it hadn’t been done sooner but now only four months before this summer’s World Cup, the FA announcing this extension.

Thomas Tuchel now has a contract that runs up to and including the 2028 Euros.

Considering England won all eight World Cup qualifiers, scoring 22 goals and conceding none, he couldn’t really have done much more.

Thomas Tuchel also taking charge of two friendlies so far, they were a 3-0 win over Wales and a 3-1 defeat to Senegal.

Tuchel says he has “loved every minute so far” and is “very happy and proud” to continue in the role.

The England boss saying that he “did not hesitate when asked to continue in this dream job.”

St James’ Park will be one of the stadiums England will play at in the 2028 Euros finals, so long as the team progress as expected.

Thomas Tuchel saying today that: “Euro 2028 will be a very special tournament and as a coach there is nothing more you want than to compete with the very best on the biggest possible stage.”

Thomas Tuchel will take England to this summer’s World Cup final where they are in a group with Croatia, Ghana and Panama.

A bonus of today’s announcement is that it will silence any talk surrounding Eddie Howe and the England job, at least for the next couple of years.

If the Newcastle United boss had shown any interest then he would for sure Eddie Howe would have been the choice of the FA when Gareth Southgate left the job. However, with Eddie Howe fully committed to United, that was never a possibility. Though that didn’t prevent the media endlessly connecting him with the England job.

With no obvious homegrown candidate, the FA forced to look overseas and Thomas Tuchel a great choice. Unless you are of the opinion that even if there was no obvious homegrown candidate, they were duty bound to still pick somebody who is English.
