Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Wednesday night and one player stood out

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has been hailed by TNT Sport pundits Ally McCoist and Joe Cole after the Reds’ 1-0 win away at Sunderland. Defender Virgil van Dijk scored their winner against the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light. Mohamed Salah got the assist.

The Merseyside outfit are sat in 6th place in the Premier League table after 26 fixtures. They are battling it out with the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea for a place in the top four. Next up is a home clash against Brighton and Hove Albion as they aim for another win.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson hailed by TNT Sports pair

Liverpool left-back Robertson caught the eye against Sunderland. It has been a tough season for the Scotland international and he has been forced to play second fiddle behind Milos Kerkez at times. However, he will now be hoping he can be a regular in the starting XI again after his solid display against the Black Cats.

McCoist was impressed by his fellow countryman on Wednesday night and said: "I'm so surprised he hasn't played more."

Ex-Reds player Joe Cole then added: "I agree. Time waits for no man and (Milos) Kerkez has been in from the start (of the season) but you can drip feed players in. Anytime I watch Robertson play, he does a job."

Robertson, 31, has been a great servant to Liverpool since joining them back in 2017. He has made 366 appearances in all competitions, 24 of which have come in this campaign, and he has chipped in with 12 goals. Prior to his transfer, he had spells with the likes of Queen’s Park, Dundee United and Hull City.

What does the future hold for Andy Robertson at Liverpool?

Liverpool have a decision to make regarding Robertson’s long-term situation. He is out of contract when this term ends and he is due to become a free agent as things stand. The Reds risk losing him for nothing later this year if nothing changes.

He was wanted by Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window. A switch to London didn’t materialise for him though and he stayed put beyond the deadline. It remains to be seen at this stage whether Spurs are still keen on a swoop.

Robertson is a useful character to have in and around the dressing room at Liverpool. He is vastly experienced and is someone who the youngsters in their squad can learn a lot from. His future remains up in the air though.
