Matty Cash missed Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Brighton and is a doubt to face Newcastle United.

Unai Emery has revealed Matty Cash is a serious doubt to face Newcastle United this weekend.

Eyebrows were raised when the right-back was omitted from the Villa squad for their 1-0 win over Brighton. Cash has been a mainstay in the team since signing for the Midlands club in 2020.

The 28-year-old has five goal contributions this season - joint second in the Premier League. Lamare Bogarde deputised in Cash’s absence as Villa edged out Brighton on home soil.

Cash has become a favourite for FPL players - with 12 per cent having him in their team. While the FA Cup does not impact the fantasy league season, enthusiasts will be taking note of his fitness as Villa face Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers next in the Premier League.

Unai Emery provides Matty Cash update

Newcastle travel to Aston Villa this weekend and will take any marginal boost possible as they aim to avenge last month’s 2-0 loss at St James' Park. Speaking to our sister title, Birmingham World, Emery confirmed Cash suffered a “small injury” and remains a doubt for Saturday.

“He was injured, with a small injury,” the Spaniard said. “I don’t know if he will be available for Saturday. Each day is important for how he is progressing.”

What Eddie Howe said after Aston Villa defeat

Reflecting on the Villa defeat in January, Eddie Howe said post-match: “The first-minute chance really shapes the game. Sandro (Tonali) goes through and it is a top save. Then Aston Villa were probably the better team in that first half and had a number of long shots and scored from one.

“I thought we chased the game pretty well in the second half and are disappointed we have lost the game. There were some real positives. It was Sven Botman's best game since returning from injury, good cameo's from Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga and Lewis Miley played really well again but ultimately you lose 2-0 at home and we are disappointed. We know we can be better around their box.

“I thought our final ball was poor today. The big thing for us is that we need every available body and quality body available because obviously we lost Bruno (Guimaraes) before the game and then Joelinton. I think Bruno could be the only one back in contention for Wednesday.”
