Parker, however, is sticking to the approach of keeping things as simple as possible and taking things one game at a time.

“Definitely, that's the route we're going down,” he said. “That's the route I chose to go down two days ago.

“That's just it, we've just boxed one off. In any game of football, when the game starts, no matter who you're up against, and anything that you have, of course you can go and get a result.

“But there's been large elements of games this year that I've said we've been competitive, and there's been fine margins.

“It was only two, three weeks ago against Tottenham, we were 2-1 up, and they scored to equalise. Tonight could have been exactly the same, but the fine margins are we managed to secure that win.

“I asked the group leading into today, over the last couple of days, I said: ‘let's just strip everything back’.

“There's some scars on this group and there's some scars on all of us at this present moment in time, at the start of this season, but let's strip all that back, and ask ourselves: ‘can we go down to London and beat Crystal Palace? Individually, every one of you, can we go and beat Crystal Palace just in a one-off game?’ and we've managed to do that.

“We now need to live in the present, really. There's still a lot of football to be played and hopefully this can give us a bit of a springboard now to build on something else.”
