Wataru Endo picked up a serious-looking injury

Liverpool star Wataru Endo will be out for 'quite a long time' after against . has provided a bleak update on Endo, 33, after he was stretchered off during .

The midfielder caught his foot in the turf while making a vital clearance shortly after had broken the deadlock in the second half. Endo soldiered on to help defend for the resulting corner, but he was clearly in agony and burst into tears when he was put on a stretcher.

It was his first start of the season, as he filled in at right-back in the absences of Jeremie Frimpong and . During his press conference ahead the Reds' fourth-round tie at home to on Saturday, Slot was asked about Endo's injury.

"We still need to do some assessments," the manager replied. "But it is clear and obvious that he will be out for quite a long time.

Immediately the Sunderland game, Slot described Endo's injury as 'serious'. "How serious we don't know yet because it still has to be assessed tomorrow, but it doesn't look good." the Dutchman added.

"I'm not too sure [if it's his ankle]. It's his foot, but if it is his ankle or his foot, that is what we have to assess tomorrow. I assume he will be out for a long, long time. What is long, it is difficult to say at this moment."

Endo's absence adds to a mounting injury list for Liverpool. The international joins right-backs Frimpong and Conor Bradley in the treatment room alongside Stefan Bajcetic, Jayden Danns, Alexander Isak and Giovanni Leoni.
