Club make U-turn over buying Sunderland man – Decision may not please player

Jenson Seelt hasn’t featured regularly for Sunderland since joining from PSV Eindhoven in June 2023. He suffered a serious injury March 2024, cutting short his debut season at the Stadium of Light.

The centre-back regained full fitness at the start of 2025 but made one appearance last season.

Last summer, VfL Wolfsburg signed him from Sunderland on loan with an option to buy. Kicker, relayed by Fussball Transfers, now cover the latest on the Bundesliga side’s plans for him.

Sunderland man’s loan spell so far

The Dutchman made three appearances for Régis Le Bris’ side this season before joining the German club.

He made his Wolfsburg debut in September and then picked up an injury, spending less than two weeks on the sidelines. The 22-year-old has so far played 716 minutes from 10 matches so far.

Seelt hasn’t made an appearance for the Bundesliga side in this calendar year as illness and injury have kept him on the sidelines.

Wolfsburg U-turn over buying

On December 16th, Sport Witness covered claims from Germany that Wolfsburg are ‘very happy’ with his performances. This convinced them to initiate contact with the Black Cats over buying him.

Two days later, Kicker explained the purchase option is set at €15m and Wolfsburg are negotiating with the Premier League side to lower the price. The same source stated the defender is also open to extending his stay with the Bundesliga side.

Later that month, the Sunderland owned player admitted the German league suits him better than the English. This may have seen as a hint that he’s keen on staying at Wolfsburg.

A fresh report from Kicker now provides the latest and it looks like Wolfsburg have made a U-turn. They seem to have made the decision not to extend his stay.

According to the report, his buying option will ‘most likely not be activated’ by Wolfsburg. This may not please the Sunderland man, who had expressed his admiration towards the German league.

Seelt has to return to the Stadium of Light, where he has a contract until 2028. Should it happen, Le Bris and the Black Cats have a decision to make on his future in the summer.
